Keeping rhinos is a challenge. Many zoos face space and climate issues when considering keeping rhinos. Most facilities have therefore constructed indoor and outdoor enclosures that aim to meet the needs of the species. However, running a facility also implies that aspects of hygiene, management and veterinarian care have to be considered.

Experiences in keeping rhinos have shown that particular greater one-horned rhinos do not thrive on abrasive floor, be it concrete in stables, marl, or other abrasive substrates in outdoor exhibits.

This presentation, will share the knowledge of what happens to a rhino foot when walking prolonged periods of time on concrete and abrasive floors, how this leads to detrimental effects on their and what can be done to avoid foot problems in rhinos under captive care.
